Function:
The General Science Lab Technician will perform laboratory tasks such as preparation of laboratory supplies, solutions, and equipment for experiments and the care of laboratory equipment and supplies. Work is reviewed by the science department faculty through inspections and by observation of results obtained. This position requires close coordinator with both the physical and biological sciences faculty and the General Science Lab Technician. Primary workstation is at the Main Campus with additional work, as needed, on the five KC Education centers to include: Salem Education, Greenville Education, Nashville Education, Vandalia Center, and Trenton Education Center. This position is responsible for assessing safety risks in the lab classes and will assist faculty to mitigate risks. Responsibilities include an ongoing assessment of safety risks, working with faculty to create, implement, and improve safety protocols and ensuring students follow safety protocols.
Organizational Relationship:
The General Science Lab Attendant reports to Dean of Arts and Sciences, who reports to the Provost, Vice President of Instructional Services, who reports to the President.
Qualifications for the Position
Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- Knowledge of standard laboratory operational procedures and equipment.
- Ability to learn the practices and procedures associated with hazardous materials.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks according to the prescribed procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students, and fellow employees.
- Commitment to community college mission and philosophy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Strong organizational, critical thinking and judgement skills.
- Ability to work in a multi-task environment.
- Work with entire College community in an effective and positive manner.
Preferred:
- Associates degree in science.
- Minimum of two years work experience in a lab setting.
Essential Functions:
- Coordination with the physical and biological science faculty to help maintain safe lab and classroom spaces.
- Promote an educational environment that recognizes and values diversity, equity, and inclusion as integral components of academic excellence.
- Assess safety risks in lab classes and ensure students follow safety protocols.
- Work with faculty to create, implement, and improve safety protocols and training to mitigate risks in labs.
- Maintain all chemical data sheets for each lab both on campus and at off campus labs.
- Coordinate with Physical Plant Staff for any removal of hazardous materials.
- Inventory equipment, chemicals and supplies to ensure sufficient materials are available or labs on campus and at off campus labs.
- Perform minor maintenance (cleaning, microscope adjustment, etc.) and repair of equipment, if possible, with level of experience needed, under the direction of the science faculty.
- Attend and participate in science faculty committee meetings, as needed.
- Prepare reports as requested.
Other Functions:
- Employee will have daily contact with students and other College employees and will have frequent contact with the community.
- Provide input to the Dean and department faculty in the budget process.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Supervise student workers, as necessary.
Supervisory Controls:
The General Science Lab Technician is expected to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision. Consultation, as necessary, is available with the Dean of Arts and Sciences.
Guidelines:
The General Science Lab Technician is expected to follow all college policies and procedures as well as all local, state, and federal laws. Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Duties will be performed in an academic environment consistent with the program of study and the needs of the students. Environment may be prone to frequent distractions and interruptions. Travel within the college district is required as necessary to perform the duties of the position.
